Context: Apple must blow industry away with iWatch
Analyst warns of uncertain future for the firm if its latest product launches do not hit the spot
Apple is at risk of becoming irrelevant if its latest product launch does not sweep users off their feet, according to analyst Context.
The tech giant is expected to take the wraps off its iPhone 6 products at a US press event on Tuesday, along with its long-awaited first foray into wearable tech – iWatch.
A number of smartwatches which have already hit the market are able to measure users' heart rates and fitness levels, but according to Context founder Jeremy Davies, Apple must be prepared to go much further if it is to stay at the top of its game.
"As far as new areas go, I think unless a wearable can read your blood pressure and sugar levels and use this to accurately monitor your health in a meaningful way, then I'm not interested in knowing how much I toss and turn at night and how many steps I walked that day," he said on the Context blog.
"It's one thing to have a single killer product in a relatively new area that you can dominate, than fighting to compete with a host of imitators all doing it at much lower prices, while still searching for the next big thing."
Last month, Canalys said a number of tech firms were waiting to see what Apple brings to the wearables table before they launch their own offerings.
Davies added that Apple's future relies on what it unveils next week.
"9 September will be a turning point for Apple, there's no doubt about it," he said. "And unless the company can come up with some game-changers, it may not be long before they might be... wondering how to get people to need them as they get older."
