EMC looks to add new datacentre to Cork site

Storage giant submits plans to expand Irish site

EMC is planning to beef up its presence in Cork, according to local press reports.

The Irish Times claims the US storage giant has submitted planning documents to local authorities with a view to expanding the current facility there. The firm will have ten years to develop the site - which will include a datacentre, office block and parking facilities - if the plans are approved.

EMC first came to Ireland in 1988 when it built a its first non-US factory in Cork.

Sales offices in Dublin and Belfast followed but the Cork facility grew to become a Centre of Excellence thanks to its research and training.

The Cork site - which could be expanded if the recent plans get the go ahead - is the largest EMC manufacturing site outside of the US. Across the EMC brand and its sister companies VMware and RSA, EMC employs more than 2,500 staff in Ireland.

The firm was not immediately available to comment on the Cork expansion plans.
