Google pauses Glass sales as it mulls product's future

'Incredible developments' in Google Glass in the workplace, tech giant claims

Sales of Google Glass are to be halted on Monday as the tech giant thinks up future versions of the device, which could be geared towards the enterprise.

In a post on its Google Plus account last night, the firm said its Explorer programme – which sold limited units to users as part of a testing and feedback programme – would end on 19 January so it can focus on the product's future.

Google Glass was based in Google[x] – a semi-secret Californian lab dedicated to innovation – but will now move to Google's main base half a mile away. The new home shows the product is "moving even more from concept to reality," the firm said.

Google remained tight-lipped on how future iterations of the wearable will look, but talked up the success of the product in the workplace, perhaps suggesting that this could be a future direction for it.

"Since we first met, interest in wearables has exploded and today it's one of the most exciting areas in technology," it said in its post. "Glass at Work has been growing and we're seeing incredible developments with Glass in the workplace."

It added that its Explorer customers found use cases for Google Glass in a variety of settings including hospital operating tables, the courts of Wimbledon, in fire stations and in kitchens, among other settings.

It admitted that it has "some work to do" on the product and said the next iterations would hit the market only "when they're ready".
