On-prem storage given death sentence

Cloud storage to be top dog in less than 10 years

On-premise storage is on its way to the technology dustbin, according to a new survey, which claims cloud storage will overtake on-prem in less than 10 years.

According to an independent global survey carried out for Tata Communications, cloud storage will have overtaken on-premise storage by 2024, with enterprises expecting to have 58 per cent of their compute and data storage held in the cloud, compared with just 28 per cent now.

"When asked how much of their IT provision would be stored in private cloud specifically by 2024, respondents predicted an average of 52 per cent – highlighting the dominance of private cloud storage," Tata Communications said. "However, 94 per cent of respondents say they would be more likely to adopt a hybrid cloud computing model if connections with the public cloud were more predictable."

Some 85 per cent of respondents to the survey claimed that cloud technology has lived up to the hype, with 23 per cent of those asked admitting it had exceeded their expectations.

Julie Woods-Moss, CEO of NextGen Business at Tata Communications, said the research shows cloud has proved itself.

"This independent research shows that the cloud has exited the hype cycle and entered the real adoption phase for businesses globally," she said. "It is now a strategic investment and a competitive differentiator."
