Tucci: EMC will not spin off VMware
EMC's chief executive insists the Federation is better together
EMC's chief executive Joe Tucci has told investors he has no plans to spin off VMware and insisted the firm's Federation model is the foundation of its success.
At an EMC Strategic Forum event yesterday, Tucci presented his views on why the Federation – which consists of EMC, VMware and big data firm Pivotal – is better together, insisting customers have more choice that way and as a result, trust the firm more.
EMC has been under pressure from certain investors to get rid of VMware but has remained tight-lipped on the speculation for months.
But Tucci broke his silence after being grilled on the subject in a Q&A session after his presentation.
"We think our model and the opportunity out there – to deal in broad transformation with our customers... – is far better served if we go together," he said.
"We are going up against giants – you're going against IBM, you're going against Cisco – sometimes we partner with them, sometimes we compete – you're going up against HP, you're going up against Microsoft and going up against Amazon.
"I really do believe that scale makes a huge difference with that reach and I do think we become more trusted and win more of these awards – and I think we are doing incredibly well there – when we are together. So that is the plan. Obviously the board is very focused on making sure we have long-term shareholder value, that's why they are there."
