Avnet and Arrow turn over Apple in US revenue map

Distributor duo crowned the largest firms by revenue in Arizona and Colorado

Distributors Avnet and Arrow have made it onto a map of the largest companies in each US state by revenue, a feat Microsoft and Apple have failed to achieve.

According to the research, Phoenix-based Avnet turns over more than any other Arizona-headquartered firm, while Inverness-based Arrow is top of the pile in Colorado, courtesy of their revenues last year of $27.49bn (£24.24bn) and $22.78bn respectively.

The world's most valuable firm, Apple, was nowhere to be seen on the map, which was compiled by Broadview Networks and used financial data from Hoover.

At $724m, Apple's market value as of 31 March 2015 was more than triple that of Chevron Corporation, but the San Ramon-based energy giant edged out Apple in its home state of California by turning over $203bn to Apple's $182bn.

Similarly, Microsoft was narrowly eclipsed by CostCo Wholesale in its home state of Washington.

Avnet and Arrow are two of the "big four" global IT distributors but – unlike Ingram Micro and Tech Data – both draw substantial revenues from the wholesale of electronic components.

Clearwater-based Tech Data, which boasts annual revenues of $27.7bn, was pipped to the post in Florida by fuel services giant World Fuel Services. Despite boasting annual revenues of $46.5bn, the world's biggest IT distie, Santa Ana-based Ingram, stood no chance courtesy of its positioning in the economic powerhouse that is California.
