Cisco: Just one per cent of things are connected today

Vendor launches 15 new products to capitalise on 'unprecedented' IoT growth

Cisco has launched more than a dozen new products in a bid to cash in on the internet of things (IoT), claiming at the moment, only one in 100 things are internet enabled.

The networking giant claims that by 2020, there will be 50 billion devices and objects connected to the internet. The IoT has been a hot topic and a key part of Cisco's strategy for a number of years, but the vendor claims that today, a massive 99 per cent of things remain unconnected.

Internet connectivity has spread to a number of devices over the past few years, such as watches, but other connected things such as household items, oil rigs and livestock are expected to become mainstream in the coming years.

To capitalise on the growing trend, Cisco has launched a long list of new products under the banner Cisco IoT System.

The vendor claims the offering – which consists of 15 separate poducts – addresses the complexity of digitisation with infrastructure to manage large-scale systems.

Six major pillars make up the Cisco IoT System products: network connectivity, fog computing, security, data analytics, management and automation, and application enablement platform.

Cisco's general manager for Systems and Software Group Kim Compton said the offerings will make life easier for those working IoT.

"The Cisco IoT System provides a comprehensive set of IoT technologies and products that simplify and accelerate the deployment of infrastructure for the internet of things," he said. "This unique systems approach delivers a framework that makes it possible to deploy, accelerate and innovate with IoT."
