US VAR embroiled in Hillary Clinton email drama - reports
Platte River Networks allegedly paid visit by agents as FBI looks into the security of Hillary Clinton's emails
A VAR on the other side of the pond has apparently become embroiled in the drama surrounding the private emails of Hillary Clinton.
According to a report on the CBS Denver website, Colorado-based Platte River Networks was managing her email account and server after she served as U.S. Secretary of State, but instead of being a government account, it was a private one, raising questions about security and whether adequate protocols had been put in place.
The report alleges that FBI agents visited Platte River Networks last week, with the company being asked to preserve information related to the emails involving Bill and Hillary Clinton.
However a formal investigation involving the solution provider has not officially been launched.
Platte River Networks was recently voted one of the top 10 places to work in Denver, after its employees filled out a questionnaire on how they felt the company was run, and the benefits they received as staff.
The FBI visit was apparently sparked after the Inspector General for the Intelligence Community made a referral to the Justice Department.
CRN sister publication Channelnomics is currently awaiting replies from both the Denver branch of the FBI and Platte River Networks, neither of which have commented in other articles to date.
However Lawrence M. Walsh, CEO and chief analyst of The 2112 Group, said the VAR had only done its job.
“It doesn’t appear that Platte River Networks did anything wrong by supporting Hillary Clinton’s email server,” he said. “They were contracted to perform a service and, according to news reports, they are cooperating with government investigators.
"What will be interesting is whether situations like this lead to new standards by which service providers are held accountable for safeguarding information that could be deemed sensitive or classified, just as is done in health care standards,” Walsh added.
