Dell unveils new custom-built datacentre offering
Datacentre Scalable Solutions (DSS) products to be launched this autumn
Dell has unveiled a new line of business – Datacentre Scalable Solutions (DSS) – which it claims will provide new operating models for datacentres, custom built for customers' needs.
DSS is targeting telecom service providers, hosting companies, oil and gas verticals and research organisations, and is building on its enterprise and Datacentre Solutions (DCS) portfolio to provide "optimised solutions to meet customers' precise needs".
With DSS, Dell said it is targeting businesses below the "hyperscale space in size that are increasingly expressing similar needs in how they buy and build datacentre capabilities". This market is worth $6bn (£3.8bn) and growing three times faster than the x86 server market, according to a statement from Dell.
Ashley Gorakhpurwalla, vice president and general manager of server solutions at Dell, said the new business reflects the advantages of Dell's privatisation.
"DSS is a prime example of how Dell, as a private company, is able to be more nimble, make faster decisions and – most importantly – drive innovation on behalf of its customers," she said.
"While others in the IT industry have been focused on marketing hype or reducing capex costs only, we've created a new operating model that is centred around flexibility."
Matt Eastwood, senior vice president of IDC, said: "Dell was the first major server vendor that recognised the unique requirements of the hyperscale market when it introduced DCS in 2007. They are now taking the best practices and learnings from their DCS business and addressing the distinct needs of the space just below the top-tier hyperscalers."
Dell is set to release its first DSS-branded products this autumn.
