Acer open for takeover - report

Acer founder Stan Shih says the firm would 'welcome' a takeover bid, according to Reuters

Acer founder Stan Shih has suggested he is open to a takeover bid for the Taiwanese PC vendor, Reuters has reported.

When reporters asked about it, Shih said he would "welcome" a bid, the newswire reported.

But he also said his Taiwanese culture is more centred on the company's duty, compared with his US and European counterparts.

"US and European management teams usually are concerned about money; their CEOs only work for money. But Taiwanese are more concerned about a sense of mission and emotional factors," he told Reuters.

Acer is not the only PC vendor rumoured to be on the market, with analysts also tipping Toshiba for a possible sale of its PC division last month, in the wake of its accounting scandal.

For the second quarter of 2015, Acer was fifth in the global PC market, holding a 6.6 per cent share of the market, according to IDC.

"Acer continued to see growth in Chromebooks with more models introduced. However, the vendor also struggled with the larger pullback in the market, particularly in EMEA where it had seen a rebound in mid-2014," the analyst said.

Acer was not immediately available for comment.
