Intel hails computing 'turning point' with Skylake launch

Sixth-generation Core processors to support broad range of devices

Intel yesterday announced the launch of its sixth-generation Core processors, operating on Skylake microarchitecture, in a move the chip maker claims "marks a turning point in people's relationship with computers".

The new processors will support a broad spectrum of devices, from compute sticks to all-in-one desktops, Intel claims. They will also offer longer battery life, improved performance and smoother gaming and video, according to the chip maker.

Kirk Skaugen, Intel senior vice president, said: "Sixth-generation Intel Core processors deliver some of the most significant advancements in computing that we have ever seen. New sixth-generation Intel Core-based systems are more responsive than ever with enhanced performance, battery life and security.

"And they can enable amazing new PC experiences like logging into your computer with your face and having a personal assistant respond to your voice. The combination of sixth-generation Intel Core processors, Windows 10 and beautiful new systems from PC manufacturers make this the best time ever to buy a new computer."

The new processors will also come with new features, such as the Thunderbolt 3 for USB Type-C, which Intel said enables "one compact port that does it all".

For the new processors based in two-in-ones, notebooks and all-in-one desktop systems, an Intel RealSense camera will be available "offering new depth-sensing capabilities and immersive experiences".

The new processors are also claimed to improve Windows 10 features including Cortana and Windows Hello which will let users use facial recognition to log in when paired with the RealSense Camera.
