Windows 10 takes a chunk out of XP in October

Windows 10's global market share continues to grow

Windows 10's market share continued its strong monthly growth in October, but its global share is still far behind that of Windows XP and Windows 8.1.

According to NetMarketShare, in October, Windows 10's global share of the desktop market jumped 1.31 points to 7.94 per cent. The monthly jump was at a similar rate to September, when the figure grew 1.42 points to 6.63 per cent.

It appears Windows 10's success has had an impact on Windows XP, whose share has finally taken something of a hit.

In October, Windows XP's market share fell significantly, down 0.53 points to 11.68 per cent. In September, its share actually grew very slightly from 12.14 per cent to 12.21 per cent.

NetMarketShare claims Windows 7 still enjoys the vast majority of market share: in October, the operating system had 55.71 per cent market share, down slightly from 56.53 per cent the month before.

The combined share of Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 has remained fairly steady since Windows 10 came out. In August - the first full month Windows 10 was available - its share was 13.95 per cent, and in October, it fell slightly to 13.22 per cent.

Microsoft claimed in August that Windows 10 is on 75 million devices globally, adding it is being used in almost every country in the world.
