Intel snaps up drone maker Ascending Technologies
Drone tech to be 'important computing platform of the future', Intel claims
Intel is set to buy German drone maker Ascending Technologies, claiming the devices will be an "important" tech of the future.
Ascending Technologies is based in Krailing, Germany, and specialises in drone autopilot software and algorithms.
After the closure of the deal, which depends on standard approvals being gained, Ascending Technologies will continue to support its existing customers while also working with Intel's Perpetual Computing team to develop tech which can help drones better understand their environments.
Intel said that drones - which are formally defined as unmanned aerial vehicles - will be an "important computing platform of the future" and presents an "incredible" opportunity for innovation in the tech industry.
"Intel is positioning itself at the forefront of this opportunity to increasingly integrate the computing, communications, sensor and cloud technology required to make drones smarter and more connected," said the firm.
Intel's chief executive Brian Krzanich will open the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas today with a keynote speech in which the Ascending buy will be discussed further.
