ASUS: You're mispronouncing our name

Taiwanese vendor releases video to clarify that its name should be pronounced 'Ay-Zeus'

PC and components manufacturer ASUS has made a video explaining how to pronounce its name properly after admitting many people were getting it wrong.

In a post on Linked In linking to the video, ASUS UK marketing director John Swatton said he had "lost count" of how many people have asked him how to pronounce its brand over the past year.

This is despite Taiwan-based ASUS now being EMEA's third-largest PC manufacturer, behind only HP and Lenovo, according to Gartner.

"So our designers created a video using a radio ad that we ran last year. Hopefully the next time I'm cold-called, the caller might pronounce our brand correctly," Swatton said.

The correct pronunciation is said as the letter 'A' followed by 'Zeus', Asus moved to clarify in the video.

"Originally named after Pegasus, the winged horse of Greek mythology, but now sounds like Zeus, the God of storms and thunder," the video's commentary states.

Commenting on the post, Andy Booth, who runs Essex-based IT development and datacentre services firm Naglotech, admitted he is among those to have got the pronunciation wrong.

"We were arguing about this at work the other day. Finally it's been confirmed: I have been saying it wrong for many years!," he said.

But in a comment on the YouTube video, 'Andy Wales4' said he was not on board. "Sorry, but I will stick with A-sus. No zeds for me! ," he said.
