RedPixie goes tablet-only as it ditches last PC

Microsoft partner runs a paperless office and now all staff use tablets or Surface devices

Microsoft partner RedPixie has declared the PC market dead, as it gets rid of its last ever PC and moves to tablets or Surfaces instead.

All the firm's staff are encouraged to work remotely as well as in the office, which CEO Mitchell Feldman (pictured) told CRN was the main motivation behind getting rid of its PCs.

The remaining PCs were donated to charities local to its Shoreditch base, he said.

"As of today, we no longer have a single PC in our office," he said. "Everyone is using tablets or Surfaces. That's got to be the way the market is going to go. We're seeing figures about the declines of PC sales, and we're a living testimony that it is definitely happening."

Last month, IDC slashed its global PC market figures and claimed that shipments will fall this year by 7.3 per cent, two points below its previous prediction because of weaker than expected conditions.

Although RedPixie staff can use mobile devices while on the move, Feldman said multiple screens and a docking station are available when they want to work at a desk.

"Our staff are not necessarily productive when they are always stuck behind a desk," he said. "We wanted to empower them to have the same experience wherever they are. Adam Pisoni, who was a former owner of Yammer, said work is an activity you do, not a place you go. That is resonating really clearly with us."

The move to scrap its final PC comes as the firm opens its first overseas office in Capetown, South Africa.

Feldman said the base, which is home to four new service-desk staff and opened two weeks ago, is the "first of many", with the US next on its hit list.

"We're not replacing our UK operations, we are just extending our capabilities," he added.
