Veritas launches solution which helps firms prepare for GDPR

Vendor's data access solution aims to allow companies to manage their global data on one platform

Information management vendor Veritas announced the launch of its new data access solution today at its global Veritas Vision conference in Las Vegas.

Veritas Access is a scale-up, network-attached storage solution which allows companies to access their data on premise, off premise, on public clouds and private clouds.

Access is designed to allow developers to understand what the performance at the back end of applications looks like, explained Mike Palmer (pictured), general manager, solutions for data insight and orchestration at Veritas.

"They can see the utilisation rates and what the consumption rates are so that they can plan accordingly," he added.

Within Access is a solution called Infomap, which allow organisations to see the data they have stored globally, on their storage and cloud solutions.

Palmer explained that Infomap can help companies prepare for the EU's incoming General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) regime.

He said that the solution can show companies where their data for European customers and employees is stored outside of the EU, which means the company can then make sure that data storage meets the requirements of the GDPR or move the data back to the EU.

Palmer added that Veritas has also partnered with Salesforce to combine Access with the Salesforce solution.

He said: "This allows you to connect to Salesforce and combine all the data, giving you the ability to make more insightful decisions about your business outcomes."

Palmer also told customers to "watch this space" for a collaboration between Google and Veritas in the next few months.

David Mayer, vice president of product management at VAR and systems integrator Software Insight - which has partnered with Veritas since before it was acquired by Symantec - said that Access will be good for customers who currently have problems managing large amounts of data.

He said: "We are excited about it. I wouldn't go so far as to say it is unique, because there are a lot of other products available in the market. Now is a really good time to be a customer; there are lots of options available. I think the differentiator for Veritas though is the fact that they have such a long legacy and background in this space that they approach it from a pretty different perspective.

"For customers that have large amounts of data at multiple locations, that single pane of glass view of data is actually unique. There are lots of options out there that are very viable, but they are potentially part of a broader management console, rather than data for the sake of data, which is what Veritas is all about. I think that will be very well received by customers who have that data management problem."
