Veritas aims to provide 360 view of data

Vendor announces a number of product launches as part of plan to provide a complete picture of companies' data

Information management vendor Veritas is aiming to provide a 360-degree view of companies' data with its product launches, announced at its global Veritas Vision event in Las Vegas.

The vendor has announced several products at the event, including the integration of its NetBackup solution with various products including Information Map and Veritas Resilience Platform (VRP).

New products were also announced, including HyperScale - a cloud storage solution designed to work with Openstack - and Access which is a scale-up network attached storage solution designed to allow companies to access data on-premise and off-premise, on public or private clouds.

The integrations and products are intended to provide a full view of data, covering data virtualisation, data insight, cloud data protection and service continuity, according to Peter Grimmond, EMEA head of technology at Veritas (pictured).

He said: "This is the concept that we are providing all these elements of data. Most customers are looking to move to new platforms, like moving from on-premise to cloud, from Oracle to Cassandra, from EMC to software-defined storage solutions.

"As they make those transitions, they are worried about how they keep their information protected, and available and resilient in that new world. We have got you covered. We had you covered, we have you covered and we will still have you covered."

Andrew North, sales and commercial director at BlueSource - a Veritas partner - said that he thinks the 360-degree concept will push Veritas above its competitors.

He explained: "The 360-view piece is probably the one that will take them further than some of their competitors are now. If you think about the problems they are going to solve, what they are really looking to do is be in the middle, looking to pervade not just where data lives but being able to give people the confidence that they have the right data at the right time.

Gavin Camilleri, managing director at BlueSource, added: "The great thing here is Veritas are solving some real business problems. They understand information management and burgeoning data stores within businesses but, crucially, they are enabling customers to shine a light on that data and make decisions quickly that have immediate positive impacts and move their organisations forward. With the right information to hand, these decisions can be made with very little risk to the business."

Integration, integration, integration

Veritas dedicated a good chunk of time to talking partners through the new NetBackup integrations with Information Map, its data management solution, and VRP, its recovery solution.

It gave a demonstration showing how Information Map allows the user access to all backup information for the organisation, globally.

NetBackup was created over 20 years ago. Scott Anderson, senior vice president of information protection solutions, said that all backup information can now be viewed on NetBackup within 24 hours of data being updated because of the Information Map integration.

He said: "NetBackup centralises today's highly fragmented data, protects digital business, collects massive amounts of metadata and can provide rapid access to data to different users. Data protection is the unsung hero of the IT world.

"You can't manage what you can't see. Information map turns on the light, provides visibility to de-risk information and reduces cost by enabling you to remove what you do not need. It helps determine what data can be moved to cloud, archived or deleted."

As well as integrating Information Map into NetBackup, the vendor also announced it will be adding its VRP solution to the platform, which is designed to provide recovery orchestration.

"VRP integrating with NetBackup meesourceans that with the click of a button you can recover your business service using a copy of the data in that backup, from one datacentre into another," Anderson explained. "It can improve predictability, as well as simplifying and speeding up the process. It is all managed from a single console, which dramatically simplifies disaster recovery plans."

BlueSource's North said that the new intergrations show that Veritas is adapting to the "way people want to buy".

He said: "Veritas has had a couple of things to overcome in the last couple of years, not least the separation from Symantec. But it's also had to adjust to standing itself up and making sure it has re-architectured its core go-to-market. NetBackup is its core driver of traditional ‘I buy it and then I use it' software. They have a broad spectrum of customers, some of whom are moving more to the cloud. These announcements are critical because they show that they are ready to sell in the way that people want to buy."
