Pinacl brings IoT to Newport

MSP looking for vendors to trial products on IoT network in Welsh city

Managed service provider Pinacl is building an Internet of Things (IoT) network across Newport which will support several smart solutions for its council.

Pinacl said the LoRaWAN [low power wide area network] it has rolled out can provide connectivity to thousands of remote smart sensors.

Once up and running, the IoT network will support several proof of concept smart solutions for the council, as well as an opportunity for IoT vendors to trial new products in a ‘living lab' city environment, Pinacl said.

The network and connected devices will be monitored and managed by Stream Technologies and its IoT-x platform.

"This open access network will be one of the first available in the UK and Pinacl are looking for interested parties (manufacturers, R&D institutions) to work with them to accelerate innovative IoT solutions within our urban environments," Pinacl said.

"The IoT network will sit alongside the existing Dark Fibre network deployed throughout Newport (and connecting back to the largest datacentre in Europe - NGD), and the public WiFi infrastructure installed within the City centre - all of these forming part of Pinacl's Smart City blueprint."
