Fujitsu and Lenovo close in on PC deal
Fujitsu president Tanaka refused to be drawn on timeframe, but expects to conclude deal soon
Fujitsu is edging closer to completing a deal with Lenovo that will see some form of tie-in in the PC market.
Fujitsu confirmed in October last year that it was in discussion with Lenovo over "various possibilities" for its PC business, declaring that a number of "strategic cooperation" options were being explored.
Fujitsu president Tatsuya Tanaka has now confirmed at a press conference that talks are in an advanced stage, but stopped short of offering a timeframe for an announcement on the deal.
"We are in the final stages of working out how best to create synergies for our two companies," Tanaka said. "We expect it to wrap soon.
"It's not like something unexpected happened [to delay the deal], but we are trying to discuss everything thoroughly."
Fujitsu separated its PC business earlier last year, spinning it out into Fujitsu Client Computing Limited.
While Lenovo is vying with HP Inc for top spot in the PC market, the big guns in the sector have all consistently seen shipment volumes shrink over recent months.
However Huawei recently announced its entrance to the market, looking to replicate the success it has seen in the tablet market where its shipment figures have continued to grow, while the likes of Apple and Samsung have struggled.
