What is HPE's Onesphere?

Vendor files trademark for hardware and software that manages and tracks 'consumption and use of cloud-based services'

Hewlett Packard Enterprises (HPE) is set to launch a new product that combines hardware and software to manage the consumption of cloud, a trademark filing has revealed.

First reported by CNBC, the trademark filing for 'Onesphere' describes the product as computer hardware and software that will manage, track and analyse the consumption of cloud-based services, and also provide "cloud computing monitoring and cost management solutions".

The filing, made in the last week of October, refers to the solution being designed for public cloud environments, as well has hybrid cloud and on-premise datacentres.

It adds that the software will be "non-downloadable", also referring to "software-as-a-service" for managing, developing and maintaining computer software applications; and "platform-as-a-service" for managing container-based architectures.

While HPE has not specifically referred to Onesphere publicly, it has in the past referenced a project dubbed "New Stack", which the firm described in May as being "designed to simplify hybrid IT management".

"HPE's vision is to deliver a comprehensive hybrid IT software platform that allows customers to seamlessly compose, operate, and optimise workloads across on-premise, private, hosted, and public clouds," it added.

HPE has not itself made any link between Onesphere and Project New Stack, but did in May claim that further Project New Stack announcements would come later this year. This would seem to fall in line with a source quoted by CNBC, who reportedly claimed Onesphere would launch this month.
