Vendors says it's cutting 'a small percentage' of its workforce

VMware has confirmed it is laying off "a small percentage" of its employees, stopping short of divulging an exact number.

A VMware spokesperson told CNBC that the vendor had made the cuts this week, but did not offer any further details as to which areas of the business will be affected.

"We can confirm that there has been a small reduction in force at VMware this week," the spokesperson said.

"Workforce rebalancing is a continual activity across VMware's businesses and geographies to ensure that resources are aligned with business objectives and customer needs.

"We continue to recruit in areas of strategic importance for the company."

After completing its acquisition of EMC, Dell was rumoured to be axing up to 3,000 jobs in 2016.

VMware contributed $2bn to Dell Technologies' $19.6bn in Q3, after seeing its own revenue jump 52 per cent.

Since coming under the Dell Technologies umbrella VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger has stressed that the virtualisation vendor remains in control of its own destiny.
