Dell overtakes HPE as global storage king
Dell surpasses HPE as global storage leader, after doing the same in the server market last week
Dell has moved past Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) as the largest enterprise storage vendor in the world, according to IDC.
The analyst claims that Dell boasted a 21.6 per cent market share in Q1 of 2018, compared to HPE's 17.7 per cent.
Dell posted year-on-year growth of 43 per cent for the quarter, with HPE's share growing 18 per cent.
Dell's share jump sees it move past HPE, which held the largest share during the last quarter of 2017 (18.9 per cent compared with Dell's 18 per cent).
The two vendors were joined by third-placed NetApp in seeing strong growth during the quarter.
Dell also overtook HPE as the largest server player in the world last week, crowning itself storage king when releasing its quarterly results.
IDC research vice president Eric Sheppard said: "This was a quarter of exceptional growth that can be attributed to multiple factors.
"Demand for public cloud resources and a global enterprise infrastructure refresh were two important drivers of new enterprise storage investments around the world.
"Solutions most commonly sought after in today's enterprise storage systems are those that help drive new levels of datacentre efficiency, operational simplicity, and comprehensive support for next generation workloads."
IBM was the only vendor in the top five to see its revenue drop year on year, declining 15 per cent.
Direct ODM vendors meanwhile continued to gain ground on the leading pack, increasing their market share by 80 per cent.
The total revenue generated by these vendors was up to $3.1bn, more than the $2.8bn generated by market leader Dell.
Dell also maintained its market lead in the external storage systems market, with a share of 32.9 per cent compared to second-placed NetApp's 14.2 per cent.
