Vendor assessing 'environmental conditions' of facility at the bottom of the Atlantic

Microsoft has activated webcams on the datacentre that it dropped into the ocean off the coast of Scotland.

The 27.6-petabyte facility was lowered into the Atlantic from the Orkney Islands in June.

Microsoft has now activated two webcams on the datacentre, with live streams viewable here.

The 40ft-long sea container is part of a wider Microsoft project to explore areas of sustainable IT, using seawater to keep the datacentre at a low temperature.

The datacentre can be operational for five years without the need for maintenance, but will remain in place for one year before being retrieved.

Microsoft said the two webcams are being used to observe environmental conditions at the datacentre.
