Cloud storage player Cloudian raises $94m in funding
Vendor will use funding to expand global sales, marketing, and its engineering team
US-based storage vendor Cloudian has raised $94m (£72m) in a Series E funding round, counting Goldman Sachs, Digital Alpha and Eight Roads Ventures among its investors.
The latest round brings the company's total funding to $173m, with the vendor claiming that this is the largest single round to date for an object storage provider.
The company plans to use the money to expand its worldwide sales, along with increasing its marketing efforts and hiring more people for its engineering team.
Established in 2011, Cloudian's architecture was built on cloud technologies designed for distributed environments.
CEO Michael Tso said: "Cloudian redefines enterprise storage with a global data fabric that integrates both private and public clouds - spanning across sites and around the globe - at an unprecedented scale that creates new opportunities for businesses to derive value from data.
"Cloudian's unique architecture offers the limitless scalability, simplicity, and cloud integration needed to enable the next generation of computing, driven by advances such as Internet of Things and machine-learning technologies."
The Californian company currently counts public health agencies in the UK and US, a large pharmaceutical company, and a top European bank among its customers.
Eight Roads Ventures began its investment history with Cloudian in 2014 and this recent round of funding affirms its confidence in the start-up's capabilities, according to Daniel Auerbach, senior managing partner at the private equity firm.
"For too long, enterprise storage users have settled for solutions that offer incrementally more performance or scale without fundamentally addressing the challenge of global data management," Auerbach said.
"When Eight Roads Ventures first invested in Cloudian in 2014 we saw a different approach - here was a company applying cloud-scale technologies to the enterprise storage challenge."
