Exclusive: UK Computer Group to revive Comet brand

UK Computer revives second brand this year, having brought back Misco

UK Computer Group has acquired the rights to the Comet brand and is set to revive household name in Q1 next year.

Comet was founded in 1933 and became a staple of the UK retail market, before its demise in 2012 saw 6,500 jobs lost.

UK Computer Group will now revive the name, in a purely online capacity, having bought the rights from Deloitte, which is acting as liquidator.

Adam Muir, director at UK Computer Group, said: "We have purchased an amazing brand with a loyal consumer database.

"It's a massive asset to UKCG and gives us a solid business with a large consumer brand as well as our current B2B element.

"We understand the market is tough, but we hope to differentiate ourselves longer term. As always customers are our focus and we will always aim to have a high level of customer service."

A report filed with Companies House, dated 29 November reveals that Comet's brand, domain names and trademarks were sold for £86,000 in June.

The former Comet business was renamed CGL Realisations in order for the liquidation to continue.

Russell Dickinson, head of marketing at UK Computer Group, said that the move into the consumer space marks an expansion for the firm.

"This is definitely something new for the group but something that we are all excited about," he said.

"Comet is a household name that many across the country grew up with so to re-introduce this back into the consumer market is certainly an exciting time for the UK Computer Group."

UK Computer Group also revived a well-known channel name earlier this year, when it acquired the naming rights to Misco before relaunching the business.
