Vendor enters analytics and data protection markets with new GreenLake offerings

HPE announces new cloud services for GreenLake

HPE has announced a host of new cloud services and offerings for its as-a-service platform GreenLake - which sees the company enter the two "high growth" software markets of analytics and data protection.

The software vendor has launched a new unified analytics offering aimed at "modernising all data and applications" wherever they are stored, as well as a new data protection as-a-service designed to "overcome ransomware attacks and deliver rapid data recovery".

It has also unveiled a new edge-to-cloud adoption framework which the company claims will allow customers to accelerate their adoption of cloud services by using a set of methodologies and tools.

HPE has already announced several developments to its GreenLake platform this year, including a new Lighthouse tool, storage-as-a-service and a Compute Cloud Console.

Here's what we know about GreenLake's latest additions…

HPE GreenLake for analytics

HPE claims its new unified analytics service is the "first unified, modern analytics and data lakehouse platform" that is optimised for on-premises and hybrid deployment and will help customers to run intensive workloads.

The vendor says the offering has "leveraged three key advancements" by being "optimised for a Kubernetes based Spark environment for on-premises deployment", "handling the diversity of data types from files, tables, streams, and objects in one consistent platform" and by "spanning edge-to-cloud".

It sees HPE enter the big data and analytics software market, which the IDC forecasts will reach $110bn by 2023.

"We are enabling businesses to break down silos and it is a hybrid native platform, so you can run it in your data centres, in your colos where your data exists today and really, it's about providing choice," Vishal Lall, chief operating officer for HPE Aruba said.

Also announced is a new Kubernetes-native Ezmeral Data Fabric Object Store which HPE says will provide "a global view of an enterprise's dispersed data assets and unified access to all data within a cloud-native model" while being "securely accessible".

HPE's Ezmeral partner ecosystem is also being expanded with six new ISV partners in NVIDIA NGC, Pepperdata, Confluent, Weka, Ahana and gopaddle.

HPE GreenLake for data protection

HPE claims its new data protection offering is "taking ransomware head on" by providing a backup and recovery service and disaster recovery.

It will provide rapid recovery, ransomware protection and long-term data retention either on-premises or in the public cloud and "modernises data protection", the company claims.

HPE's backup and recovery service is designed for hybrid cloud and includes "policy-based orchestration and automation" which will be delivered through a SaaS console, allowing customers to "protect their virtual machines with three simple steps in less than five minutes" across hybrid cloud and on-prem, HPE says.

And the vendor's disaster recovery feature follows the completion of its Zerto acquisition and will see HPE deliver Zerto's disaster recovery as-a-service through GreenLake, helping customers to "recover from ransomware attacks in minutes".

HPE edge-to-cloud adoption framework

The new edge-to-cloud adoption framework announced by HPE includes a set of methodologies and automation tools aimed at helping customers achieve an "optimum cloud operating model".

It will "accelerate and de-risk the path to any cloud experience", senior vice-president and general manager Keith White says, and stretches across private cloud, public cloud and the edge.

Among the domains included in the framework are Strategy and Governance, People, Operations, Innovation, Applications, DevOps, Data and Security to provide a roadmap for customers to move to cloud environments.

"Most enterprises are undergoing some form of digital transformation and these transformations are difficult," Alexia Clements, vice-president of worldwide sales and go to market at GreenLake, said.

"We've created a structured framework and approach to simplify our clients' hybrid cloud journeys. We've developed a maturity and transformation framework that helps companies adopt a more modern operating model and serve as a foundation for customers' digital transformations."
