Computacenter and SCC choose their weapons for services skirmish

Duo are turning to digital services and DevOps as they continue their respective services transformations, says Doug Woodburn

Computacenter and SCC may be the UK's two largest VARs, but they are not letting their large stature hold them back as they evolve beyond their roots in reselling.

While others around them have gone backwards or even gone bust, Computacenter and SCC have managed to stay relevant - and have even increased sales and profits - in a market increasingly shaped by services and cloud.

Computacenter has carved out a niche in desktop transformation services while SCC is embracing hybrid cloud, having acquired a string of datacentres and cloud services firms.

Our respective features in this week's issue of CRN on the two giants of the channel provide intriguing clues as to where the duo are heading next in their journeys.
While Computacenter is repositioning itself as a ‘digital service enabler' (see p11),

SCC sees its future in DevOps (p19) and to that end is gearing up to open a 60-strong software development operation in Vietnam.

The rate of change occurring at Computacenter and SCC is being mirrored across the industry of course, but as the two largest players the pair perhaps deserve more credit than more agile rivals for managing that tricky transition without losing momentum.
