"Make it real" - the strapline for Dell Technologies as the brand came to life following its merger with EMC - attempts to put across the vendor's vision of digitally transforming every aspect of our personal and professional lives. From the infrastructure of our cities, the provision of our healthcare and the automation of our vehicles, CEO Michael Dell made it clear in his opening keynote that his company is now so much more than the humble PC business that started out in the 1980s.

Digital transformation, IT transformation, workforce transformation and security transformation are Dell's four pillars in its vision for a smarter, digitised future - a future that can be harnessed through embracing emerging technologies such as AI, machine learning and software-defined solutions, according to Michael Dell.

The CEO insisted that technology now comes at the top of CEO and business agendas as the boundary between technology strategy and business strategy shrinks into irrelevance.

"Today, technology strategy is business strategy, and those of us, the nerds and engineers and techies, we are at the centre of the conversion… [We are] in the spotlight and becoming rock stars," he told a room of 14,000 delegates during his keynote.
