Chief technologist, Computacenter

Tell us something most people won't know about you

I played football both professionally and semi-professionally for several years until (lack of) ability made me focus on technology.

What has been your highlight of 2018 so far?

Professionally, seeing the results of work put in last year come to fruition this year in terms of results. Personally, I was very proud of my son's exam results at school.

Who would play you in the film of your life?

Definitely someone without an ego; I'll go for Leonardo DiCaprio, as he doesn't seem to take himself too seriously.

Which tech firm (other than your own!) do you most admire?

There's a few and it's a tough choice to pick just one, but as I like disruptive technologies I'll go for Nvidia: good vision, strong product portfolio and good leadership.

What is your guiltiest pleasure?

That's easy - Kylie (just don't tell anyone).

What is the most irritating tech buzzphrase of 2018?

Probably ‘blockchain', although ‘serverless computing' is running it close.

What would be your first act if you were made Prime Minister?

Restore the NHS to full health. It's a tremendous national asset. Second would be a new vote on Brexit.

What's the biggest untapped opportunity facing the channel?

There is lots of change going on at present, and change represents opportunity. For me, the information market is where the largest changes are going on; people are starting to realise the value of data.

What is your most treasured possession?

Henrik Larsson's jersey from the 2003 UEFA Cup semi-final, in which he scored the winner.

What do your family think you do all day?

Build PowerPoint slides.

Who has been your mentor in business?

I've had several throughout my career who have all helped immensely and it would be unfair to single out one. However, I'll always revert to my father who instilled a work ethic in me which brought opportunities he could never have, and I'll always be grateful to him.
