The Channel Recruiter

What’s the most surprising lesson 2024 has taught you so far?

2024 has reminded me of the importance of agility and adaptability. With constant changes in the tech landscape, staying nimble and willing to pivot is essential. It’s not just about following trends, but actively shaping them to meet real-world needs.

If you could have dinner with any historical figure, who would it be and why?

I would choose Ada Lovelace, often regarded as the first computer programmer. Living in the 19th century, she envisioned a future where machines could go beyond mere calculations to perform complex tasks and enhance human creativity. Her forward-thinking ideas about technology and its potential to benefit society were groundbreaking. I would love to discuss her vision for technology and how she would perceive today’s advancements, especially in terms of ethical considerations and the importance of inclusivity in the tech space.

Which tech or channel figurehead has impressed you the most this year, and why?

This year, I’ve been inspired by Whitney Wolfe Herd, CEO and founder of Bumble. Whitney has leveraged technology to create a safer and more empowering space for women in the online dating industry, a field traditionally dominated by male-led companies. Through Bumble’s unique women-first approach, she’s driven positive change by using tech to put women in control of their interactions. In 2024, her work to expand Bumble’s platform into areas like professional networking and friendship-building has shown her commitment to using technology to build inclusive, empowering online communities for women and minorities alike.

What technology trend do you think is being overhyped, and why?

While AI is an incredible tool, I believe there’s an overemphasis on its application without considering potential biases and ethical risks. It’s essential to approach AI with a balanced perspective, focusing on responsible, transparent deployment.

If you were stranded on a deserted island but could have one piece of tech with you, what would it be?

I’d bring a solar-powered satellite phone. Not only would it help with communication, but having a lifeline back to the world would be invaluable on a deserted island.

What’s your go-to productivity hack that keeps you on track during a busy day?

My top productivity hack is time-blocking. I dedicate specific hours to different tasks and avoid distractions, which allows me to maintain focus and meet deadlines without feeling overwhelmed.

If you had the time to learn one new skill, what would it be?

After going through my ordeal in 2014 and as a survivor of a high-profile domestic violence attack, I’m committed to building a platform to support victims in their journey to becoming survivors. I’d love to deepen my skills in digital community building, trauma-informed care, and online platform design, so I can create a safe, accessible, and empowering space for those impacted by domestic violence. This project requires both technical skills and an understanding of supportive, survivor-centred communication, and I’m passionate about learning all I can to make a lasting, positive impact.
