Diversity, Responsibility and Doing the Right Thing in Telecoms

Claire Cawthorne, Managing Director – Millgate Connect

Telecoms is all about connection—but real connection goes beyond the technology itself. It’s about people, relationships, and trust. As a telecoms reseller, Millgate Connect sits at the intersection between technology providers and customers, and our role is about far more than delivering solutions. It’s about understanding diverse needs, caring for our customers, and doing the right thing for our community.

The telecoms sector is fast-paced and constantly evolving, shaped by new services, innovations, and customer expectations. In this environment, diversity isn’t just a social goal - it’s a business strength.

Teams that bring together different perspectives and backgrounds are better equipped to solve problems, empathise with customers, and deliver the right outcomes. For a reseller like us, where success is built on listening and tailoring solutions to a wide range of businesses, diversity helps us see challenges through multiple lenses. That leads to better service and stronger customer relationships.

Like many industries in technology, telecoms still faces hurdles. Women and underrepresented groups are less visible in technical roles and leadership positions. Opportunities can feel limited, and pathways into the industry aren’t always clear.

For resellers, who are often SMEs, this can be an even greater challenge, but also an opportunity. We’re small enough to build genuine connections, flexible enough to open doors for new talent, and committed enough to embed inclusivity into everything we do.

We’ve focused on strategic partnerships, aligned ourselves with suppliers who share our values, and doubled down on delivering tailored, outcome-based solutions

At Millgate Connect we’ve built a culture where caring for the customer and doing the right thing guide every decision. That philosophy extends not just to how we serve businesses, but also to how we look after our people and support our community.

We invest in apprenticeship programmes, opening up opportunities for young people to build careers in telecoms and technology. Apprenticeships bring in fresh talent and help us create a workforce that reflects the diverse communities we serve. For us, it’s about nurturing people, not just filling roles.

Our social responsibility efforts are another way we live out our values. We are proud to support Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, our corporate charity. From fundraising at our Tech Expo to entering a team in their annual Dragon Boat Race, to employee away days volunteering at the hospice, our people put time and energy into making a real difference.

We recently announced a partnership with YP Academy, a local women’s open-age football team, as their main sponsor. Supporting women’s sport aligns with our belief

that opportunity should be available to everyone, whether on the football field, in the workplace, or within the industry.

Being shortlisted for the CRN Women & Diversity in Channel Awards is a milestone and a reminder of what’s possible when you put people at the heart of your business. The future of telecoms isn’t just about technology, it’s about people. At Millgate Connect we may not build the networks or the technology – but we build relationships. Those relationships are strengthened by a culture that values diversity, champions responsibility, and always seeks to do the right thing. For resellers like us, that means being close to our customers, understanding their unique needs, and creating tailored solutions that help them thrive. Diversity within our team makes us stronger, more empathetic, and better prepared to meet those needs.

From our apprentices and employees to our charity partners and local community, we’re proud to play our part in making telecoms more inclusive, people-focused and responsible.
