Why Representation Matters: Building Belonging in Tech
Dylan Aupetit, Senior Global Partner Manager – World Wide Technology
Early in my career, I was often the only black men in the room. There were moments when I questioned whether I belonged. That feeling is familiar to many in underrepresented groups. But those experiences fuelled my determination to create change not just for myself, but for the next generation of talent.
I’ve seen firsthand how inclusion transforms teams. When people feel valued for who they are, collaboration flourishes. Ideas that might have been dismissed are heard, debated and refined. Teams become stronger, more innovative and better equipped to solve complex problems.
One of the most fulfilling parts of my work shaping a culture of understanding and respect as well as helping young people recognize the strength in their own stories. By supporting schools and colleges, guiding students and connecting them to real-world opportunities, I’ve seen confidence grow and potential realised. That’s the real impact of inclusion.
In tech, diverse perspectives are essential, they’re strategic. They help companies anticipate customer needs, innovate faster and create products that serve a wider audience. Achieving this, however, requires more than policies, it demands a culture and leadership that consistently reinforces these values.
At World Wide Technology, inclusion is at the core of how we operate. WWT is committed to creating a workplace where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered. From mentorship programs to employee resource groups and community initiatives, WWT ensures that inclusion is more than a statement.
This work is personal for me. I know what it feels like to struggle to be seen and heard. I also know the difference it makes when someone believes in you, invests in your growth, and creates space for your ideas to thrive. Embracing diverse experiences doesn’t just build stronger companies, it builds a better future for everyone.
At the end of the day, tech is about problem-solving, innovation and impact. The greatest impact comes when we ensure everyone, regardless of background, can contribute, thrive and lead.
