Channel Marketing: The Strategic Engine of Cybersecurity Sales
Kate Danks, Global Director of Channel Marketing - Coro
In the fast-paced, high-stakes world of cybersecurity, the spotlight often shines on the latest threats or groundbreaking technologies. Yet, behind every successful sale and every protected company, there's a critical, often-overlooked force: the channel marketing team. For women in this field, the challenge is twofold: navigating a technical industry often perceived as a "boys club" while championing a role that is widely misunderstood and undervalued.
This blog explores the unique demands of channel marketing, the non-linear path to career growth, and the vital importance of building a support network to not only survive but to thrive.
The Unique Demands of the Role
The job of a channel marketeer requires more than just a marketing background; it calls for a rare blend of strategic foresight and hands-on execution. The work often happens behind the scenes, making it a constant fight for recognition and understanding. This means the role demands a proactive mindset and a high degree of operational discipline.
I’ve learned this firsthand. The role often requires stepping into complex environments and laying robust foundations for growth. I once had to navigate a critical operational gap, even working through a holiday period to personally manage a high volume of outstanding invoices to protect partner relationships and secure future budgets. It was a stark reminder that this job requires immense dedication.
I also learned that activity doesn’t always equal impact. I once managed a multi-vendor campaign that, despite being flawlessly executed, failed to deliver a return on investment because of a breakdown in communication. The experience taught me to prioritize embedding rigorous accountability and closed-loop reporting into every campaign from the start.
The Non-Linear Path to Growth
Career growth isn't always a linear climb; sometimes, the path forward requires a leap of faith. It's easy to get comfortable in a long-term role where you've established a strong network and a proven track record. For years, my skills were nurtured in a single environment, building a solid foundation of experience. However, to achieve the next step in my career, I had to step outside of that comfort zone.
Leaving a role and a support network that I had cultivated over many years was challenging. But the immediate recognition from new colleagues and leadership helped me realize just how transferable and solid my skill set was. The experience validated that the skills gained in the channel—from operational discipline to strategic foresight—are universally valuable, and that sometimes you must change your environment to truly appreciate your own growth.
Building Your Network: A Key to Success
While the demands of the role are high, you don't have to navigate them alone; building a strong support network is key to thriving. For me, that has meant cultivating a network of trusted colleagues, partners, and mentors who have been instrumental in my professional growth.
This network becomes your tribe—a place to share experiences, find mentorship, and receive encouragement. It's how you ensure that even when the work is done behind the scenes, your contributions are seen and your voice is heard.
Today, as Director of Channel Marketing at Coro, a company actively disrupting the cybersecurity market, I use these lessons every day. I get to build a channel marketing strategy from the ground up, a challenge that demands constant growth and strategic thinking, but it’s made all the more rewarding by the incredible network of professionals who support each other in making the channel the engine of cybersecurity sales.
