German VAR Bechtle has launched Bechtle CO₂-Conscious IT to help customers offset carbon emissions generated during the production and delivery of purchased IT hardware.

It will be delivered in partnership with carbon offsetting firm goodcarbon.

The Berlin-based digital platform helps companies invest in nature-based carbon credits by funding verified climate projects.

It will apply a nature analytics framework to develop, assess and monitor nature-based solutions.

Bechtle said the service will include transparent calculation of emissions, documented in detailed reports to enable customers to offset the associate footprint through selected climate projects.

Bechtle CO₂-Conscious IT will also help organisations in accounting for Scope 3 emissions within their carbon footprint, in line with GHG requirements.

As part of its Climate Strategy 2030/2050 and its Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)-aligned targets, the VAR will also work with goodcarbon to offset its own unavoidable emissions.

“With our new offsetting service, we help our customers achieve the objectives set out in their climate strategies in a credible and transparent way,” said Sophie Mándoki, chief sustainability manager at Bechtle.

“Bechtle CO₂-Conscious IT combines environmental responsibility with tangible added value for our customers.”

Jérôme Cochet, co-founder and CEO of goodcarbon, added: “The projects selected for Bechtle CO₂-Conscious IT enable companies to credibly support their beyond value chain mitigation (BVCM) activities in line with the requirements of the SBTi.”

BVCM refers to climate action outside a company’s own value chain that complements, but does not replace, direct emissions reductions.

Examples include financing renewable energy projects in other regions, protecting or restoring natural ecosystems, removing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere and supporting initiatives that help avoid emissions in developing countries.

This announcement comes a few months after Bechtle’s net-zero goals were confirmed by the SBTi.

The group has committed to reducing its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 90 per cent by 2050.

In an interview with CRN last year, Dr Nicole Diehlmann, chief sustainability manager at Bechtle, explained that the firm is planning to decrease its scope 3 emissions from purchased goods and services, as well as the use of sold products, by 55 per cent for every €1,000 (£874) of value it creates by 2030.

“Through transparent and ethical conduct, we aim to contribute not only to the sustainable development of our company but also to that of society as a whole,” she noted.
