New Datto CEO predicts consolidation, with the vendor 'in the market for acquisitions'

Tim Weller announced as Datto's new permanent chief exec

New Datto CEO Tim Weller expects consolidation in the MSP-focused space to continue, saying that Datto itself is "in the market for acquisitions".

Weller (pictured) has been serving as interim chief exec since founder Austin McChord exited the role in October, but has now moved into the role on a permanent basis.

Datto merged with Autotask in 2017, after it was bought by the latter's parent company Vista Equity Partners. That move has given Datto a level of financial security in terms of seeking out acquisitions, Weller said.

"We could certainly acquire as necessary," he explained. "We are the largest player that is completely channel-focused so we don't feel the urgency to buy something just to get better.

"[Any acquisition] would be through the lens of ‘is this useful technology that would integrate well for MSPs?'

"It's fair to say we are in the market for acquisitions, but there is no urgency - we are perfectly capable of building our own technology."

Weller stated that the UK, DACH, Benelux and southern Europe are areas where Datto may look to acquire.

Since the Datto/Autotask merger, the MSP service provider space has seen continued consolidation, with Continuum snapping up US security vendor Carvir in June and Kaseya purchasing RapidFire Tools in September last year.

"We knew when we made the acquisition that we were lighting a fuse in the space, and a number of our competitors have bought many things in 2018," the newly minted chief exec said.

"I predict consolidation will continue and scale is definitely going to matter.

"We now have enough scale to do anything we need to do for partners, but we don't want to be that big company.

"In terms of the experience, we want that personal, bespoke touch, where partners can still get in touch with me and other members of the team."

Since joining the vendor in June 2017, Weller has held the roles of CFO, COO and president.
