Matrix IT founder Nic Cronin has returned to lead OnecomMatrix as MD, seven months after the acquisition of his former business.

OnecomMatrix was launched in July following the consolidation of Onecom’s IT operations and Matrix IT under a single brand.

Cronin originally stepped down from the organisation in April, commenting on LinkedIn, “After 23 years at Matrix IT, I’m moving aside and starting a new journey.”

Marking his return, Cronin said, “Now that the integration of the businesses has been successfully completed, I am excited to be returning to the business under the OnecomMatrix brand.

“I am especially pleased to be working with our team, who are delivering value for customers backed by the scale and breadth of Onecom Technology Group’s resources and security-led operating model.”

In the role, Cronin will oversee OnecomMatrix’s strategic direction and operations, and lead an 80-strong team of specialists.

CEO of Onecom Technology Group, Aaron Brown, said, “I am delighted to appoint Nic to head up OnecomMatrix, returning to a business he knows inside out as we move together into a new era.

“Together, we look forward to expanding OnecomMatrix’s customer base, empowering more businesses to grow and succeed through our cyber security-first approach and long-established expertise.”

OnecomMatrix and the acquisition

In February, Matrix IT was acquired by Onecom, as the business looked to expand its regional presence on the south coast and accelerate its ambition to deliver end-to-end IT services at scale.

The acquisition marked Onecom’s 14th since 2020, and reflected the company’s strategy of expanding its IT expertise and bolstering its service delivery specialty.

In July, Onecom united its IT arm under OnecomMatrix, consolidating the two businesses into a single operation focused on delivering IT managed services with a cybersecurity-first approach.

At the time, Brown explained, “Bringing these two businesses together gives our customers access to a deeper bench of talent and a security-first mindset that underpins everything we deliver.

“OnecomMatrix is built to be the IT partner our customers need for what comes next.”

Cronin now returns to lead OnecomMatrix following the integration of the two businesses, overseeing an 80-strong team as the company looks towards its next phase of growth.

Onecom ranked 28th in CRN’s Top VARs list in 2025.
