New tool launched to help firms buy sustainable IT

TCO Development's new database feature notifies buyers of certified products that meet predefined sustainability parameters

Tech certification organisation TCO Development has launched a new feature which it claims will make it easier for purchasers to buy sustainable IT products.

The organisation has already certified 3,500 products through its globally recognised TCO Certified scheme and its new tool allows purchasers of IT to receive notifications of products that are certified and meet individually predefined sustainability parameters.

Its expanded Product Finder database includes measurable sustainability performance data for certified products to help purchasers make more sustainable and informed product choices, as well as a feature that calculates use phase CO2 emissions and energy costs.

The measurable sustainability data on certified products includes the percentage of post-consumer recycled plastic content, energy consumption, battery cycles and weight, size and resolution of the device.

"With the subscription function, purchasers can be at the frontline of sustainable procurement, staying up to date with the latest certified models," stated Clare Hobby, purchaser engagement manager at TCO Development.

"Independent verification organisations we work with spend more than 20,000 hours per year verifying that products and their manufacturing facilities comply with the criteria in TCO Certified. This comprehensive verification system makes TCO Certified the most robust and reliable certification available for IT products."

TCO Certified updates its criteria every three years in order to stay current with technical developments and sustainability challenges.

"With more than 3,500 certified products, purchasers can use TCO Certified with confidence, knowing they have a direct impact on the sustainability for many of the IT products they source," Hobby added.
