Bets being taken on BlackBerry lover Obama's next phone

Samsung made odds-on favourite by Paddy Power following rumours that leader of free world is ready to ditch his BlackBerry

Paddy Power has opened a book on the make of president Obama's next phone following – albeit flimsy – rumours he is getting ready to ditch his beloved BlackBerry.

The online betting firm has made Samsung the odds-on favourite following reports that the White House is testing out two Android smartphones.

Obama is the Canadian smartphone maker's most famous user, once saying of his BlackBerry "they're going to have to pry it out of my hands".

But following a report in the Wall Street Journal that his team was testing Samsung and LG Android smartphones, rumours spread that the leader of the free world is ready to ditch his BlackBerry in favour of an Android phone.

The gossip was swiftly shot down by a White House representative, who told the Associated Press that the "executive Office of the President isn't participating in any pilot programmes affecting its handheld devices".

Not to be put off, Paddy Power is offering odds of 1/2 on Samsung due to its enhanced security features and the fact that customers fleeing BlackBerry have tended to switch to the South Korean giant.

LG is on 2/1, with Apple an outsider on 8/1. Meanwhile, a price of 50/1 is available should the basketball-loving president opt for a pay-as-you-go.

But even Paddy Power doesn't seem at all sure that Obama will actually ditch his BlackBerry any time soon, offering odds of 4/6 that he'll stick with the ailing firm until at least the end of his second term. And he's only 9/2 to bin it in 2014.
