Cisco and Olicom have signed a long-term agreement to jointly develop Token Ring technology for router and switching products. Under the deal Cisco will provide the switching technology and system software and Olicom will provide the Token Ring media access control, custom ASIC designs and core Token Ring technology.
Olicom commercial director Prem Athwall said both companies would benefit technically, and Olicom would benefit from Cisco's sales and marketing organisation. The deal does not cover joint selling or marketing, and both will continue to market different versions of the technology under their own names.
Athwall said more networking companies will have to make strategic alliances as the network market accelerates. 'Companies need to get hold of new technology to keep up. This is the best way to do it.' Cisco said that products resulting from the agreement would join other Token Ring products in its Ciscoblue product set.
