Kingston talks to service providers on warranty issue

Kingston Technology is in talks with service providers as the memory manufacturer begins its campaign to get corporates to upgrade their servers' memory capability.

The company has commissioned an independent survey - conducted by Mindcraft - to illustrate the benefits of increased memory on performance.

The survey showed that by upgrading the memory to 512Mb, a Web server demonstrated an increase in response time of about 500 per cent.

Alison Heath, UK sales director at Kingston, stated that in order for corporates to take up the initiative, the crucial part is getting service providers on board.

As exclusively revealed in PC Dealer (3 February), Compaq resellers are being forced to stop configuring PCs with third-party components as a result of a clause in the vendor's Ts&Cs, which is threatening to invalidate warranties on hardware.

Heath said: 'Server memory can be a complete nightmare because of the loss of warranty. Resellers don't normally want to take the risk. But we are saying that if you put in the extra memory from Kingston it doesn't affect the server warranty.'
