Bank saves on bandwidth

High street bank saves millions following decision to use the channel

Millions of pounds have been saved by a major high street bank following its decision to use the channel to increase bandwidth throughout its business.

The bank, believed to be Abbey National, was unhappy with the quote from its incumbent supplier, BT Global Services, to upgrade 750 64k lines.

The customer then decided to evaluate Expand Networks' bandwidth acceleration products, resold by VAR Teksys.

Teksys was already working with the bank because of its relationship with First National Bank, acquired by Abbey National in 1995.

The £3m contract will be to provide Expand kit and support, while BT Global Services will do the integration.

Scott Dobson, EMEA vice-president of Expand, confirmed that BT Global Services was supplied through Teksys. "BT Global Services is not an accredited partner. Therefore it would have to pay more if it bought direct from us," he said.

Simon Ognal, managing director of Teksys, declined to confirm the customer's name. But he said: "We are always proactive in advising customers on where savings can be made."

Abbey National and BT Global Services declined to comment.
