Services help to create another Dimension

Network integration firm reports increase in UK turnover to $206m

Despite an increase in the turnover of its UK business, network integration giant Dimension Data's overall turnover dipped for 2003. It also made a loss.

Describing trading conditions as "challenging" for its financial year ended 30 September, the company posted a global loss of $9m, compared with a profit of $45m last year. Turnover was down from $2.2bn to $2.1bn.

But UK turnover increased to $206m, compared with $196m last year. Services in the UK contributed 68 per cent to total UK turnover, with managed services and professional services reaching $93m and $47m respectively.

The company, which traditionally plays in the networking infrastructure space, sells products from vendors such as Cisco, Avaya, EMC and Check Point, and has been striving to diversify its offering through services.

Mark Griffith, marketing director at Dimension Data UK, said managed services are key. "Storage is a bigger part of our business now and we are also seeing success in our managed security services offering," he said.

The company said it has improved its professional services capabilities through its acquisition of e-business consulting firm Proxicom in June.

Tariq Ahmed, SME business manager at Check Point, said Dimension Data has become more visible to the security vendor. "Our major account managers are engaged with it on a number of big projects," he said.
