Leeds-based VAR SICL's new sales director Joey Hemingbrough told CRN that its new owner MXLG was a big factor in luring her back to a channel role.
SICL was purchased in April by MXLG, a joint venture by technology-focused investor MXC Capital and telecoms giant Liberty Global. It was the first purchase for the recently formed company.
"Not all angel investors have that industry knowledge, and that can sometimes create a disconnect in the business," she said. "The opportunity to work with a big backer that understands the needs of IT companies was too good an opportunity to pass up."
Hemingbrough (pictured) started her career in IT channel roles nearly 20 years ago at Insight and has spent time at MSP Millgate, AAG Systems and most recently Firstnet.
She ran her own sales and marketing subcontracting and consultancy business for the past two years before being drawn back into a "hands-on" channel role as sales director at SICL.
"I spoke to SICL's previous owners and was excited about SICL as a business," she explained.
"Then it was acquired by MXLG and they got me in and told me about the plans they had in relation to their organic growth and acquisition trail and I got really excited. So I hung up my self-employed hat."
Hemingbrough says MXLG was "absolutely" a factor in her returning to a role in a channel business.
"MXLG is the first company I have come across where most of the people involved in the partnership are from the channel and from an IT background. Yhey understand our collective and what it takes to grow a business in the channel and that was refreshing," she said.
Hemingbrough also said that SICL will not be the last procurement by MXLG.
"The plan is for further acquisitions over a three-year period. SICL was the first one made and the plan is to acquire other businesses whereby we all have complementary services spread over the UK so that we can all work cohesively," she said.
Hemingbrough also said that any acquisition made by MXLG will be an IT company which it will then grow organically.
Since starting her role at the end of June, SICL has added 10 more to its headcount, and Hemingbrough stated that the firm will continue to grow staff over the next three years.
"Part of MXLG's plan is not just to acquire, but also to grow each business that they acquire, so it's organic as well as acquisitive," she said.
