Supermicro succumbs to pressure over AMD
Server maker bows to popular demand and agrees to stock AMD64 solutions
Long-time Intel stalwart Supermicro has finally given in to customer demand and announced that it will sell a wide range of AMD64 solutions through the channel.
The server maker, which already works with distributors including Ideal, Microtronica and Computer 2000 (C2000) in the UK, has revealed that it intends to supply server building blocks using AMD64 technology internationally through channel partners Ingram Micro, ASI and Tech Data.
The move represents a u-turn for Supermicro which has long been a Intel-only supplier and although it has offered some low-key AMD solutions in recent times, this is the first time the company has publicly endorsed AMD technology. Dell is now the only big player left that builds Intel-only PCs and notebooks.
“We strive to build solutions based on leading innovative and reliable technology, and by adding AMD64 technology into our portfolio of offerings, we are thus able to significantly broaden the choices available to our customers,” explained Wally Liaw, vice president, international sales, Supermicro.
“Supermicro’s new solutions optimised for AMD64 dual-core technology will provide end-users with the performance and reliability needed to realise the full potential of their business-critical applications.”
Patrick Moorhead, vice president, global channel marketing, AMD said: “Supermicro, a market leader in x86 server and motherboard solutions for the distribution channel, has chosen the AMD Opteron processor to augment its server product offerings and give customers broader platform choice through a team of leading distributors.
“We commend Supermicro for listening to its customers and channel partners and choosing the industry-leading performance-per-watt benefits of AMD64 multi-core processors.”
He added: “With Supermicro, AMD now has access to a broader market for servers than we have had, as resellers and integrators offer new AMD Opteron processor-based servers to help satisfy the growing need for industry-leading x86 platforms in SMEs.”
