Former SCH director named as Datawind's UK chief executive

Hudson: Apple has created the market for tablet PCs

Former SCH director Warren Hudson has been tasked with expanding Datawind’s reseller network after being unveiled as the netbook PC vendor’s UK chief executive.
SCH partner Datawind specialises in mobile computing devices that are sold with a Vodafone SIM card and a year-long data plan, which provides users with at least 30 hours of web access each month.

Hudson said he is planning to sign “one or two” new distributors over as the firm prepares for the launch of its first tablet PC products in December.

“Apple has done a very good job at creating a market for tablet PCs and I think
it is a market that is going to become pretty explosive,” he said.

“There will be a few vendors that will have a difficult time trying to hit a certain price point with their products and may end up cutting corners during the production process, but we will not be one of them.”

Hudson added that the firm is also planning on expanding its reseller network to coincide with the products' launch.

“We have a fairly limited range of resellers at the moment because our product range has been quite small, but with these new products we do plan to add more,” he added.

Darren King, managing director of Apple reseller Square Group, said Datawind was entering a very interesting market place.

He added: “I cannot comment on what is happening with other vendors’ devices, but the iPad has surpassed all our expectations and sold well for us in the consumer and enterprise markets.”
