Spam reaches new heights
Opportunity for the channel as DTI survey finds UK firms inundated with junk mail
A Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) survey has claimed that spam has reached "unacceptable" levels for UK businesses.
More than 1,000 firms were questioned between October 2003 and January 2004. The results revealed that over half of them saw spam as a growing concern.
The survey, carried out by the DTI and accounting firm PwC, also found that 17 per cent of firms said spam made up more than 50 per cent of all emails received, with just 20 per cent of firms implementing spam filtering tools. This creates a window of opportunity for the channel.
Andrew Beard, PwC advisory services director, said: "The amount of spam hitting firms is set to rise and may feature higher on the security risk agenda."
Simon Perry, vice-president of security strategy at Computer Associates, said: "It is critical that anti-spam solutions work together with firewalls and antivirus tools to ensure there are no holes in a company's defences."
