Microsoft on Windows 7 defensive

Software giant talks up channel benefits of new operating system

Microsoft has hit back at views that the Windows 7 launch will throw up compatibility issues and claims the release will prove a good margin opportunity for the channel.

Despite recent surveys suggesting Windows 7 adoption will be lacklustre, and that the channel should be aware of compatibility issues, the software giant is adamant there will not be a repeat of the Vista launch.

Laurence Painell, Windows 7 product manager, said: “Microsoft has taken on board all feedback on Vista. There has been a lot of innovation over the past three years and we have learned what works best.”

Simon Aldous, partner group manager at Microsoft, said: “Businesses are making their hardware last longer, so Windows 7 is a great upgrade opportunity for the channel. Microsoft will focus on capacity, competency and the capability of partners to ensure they are ready to communicate the value of Windows 7.”

Jon Tate, managing director of software developer ChangeBASE AOK, agreed Windows 7 would create channel opportunity.

“There will be big service opportunities for the channel with firms that need application tweaking.”
