StorageTek rides the Information Lifecycle
Vendor pushes ILM strategy with range of new products and services
StorageTek is hoping to set the storage industry alight by ramping up its Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) strategy and releasing a raft of new products and services.
At its forum in San Diego last week the vendor reiterated its commitment to ILM, following recent announcements that rivals such as Hewlett-Packard, EMC and ADIC are launching ILM strategies.
However, Pat Martin, StorageTek's chief executive, said he welcomed the competition, and claimed that, since the firm first mentioned ILM almost a year and a half ago, everyone has been talking about it.
"I am delighted other vendors are embracing ILM. Customers can only win," he said.
Martin added that the firm has launched new products, including the SL8500 Modular Tape Library system, the BladeStore B250 disk array, greater connectivity options on products and a new replication and mirroring appliance.
Claus Egge, programme director of European storage research at IDC, said: "ILM is really a logical progression of Hierarchical Storage Management. It makes sense for customers, but the problem is in the implementation.
"All of the good ideas about ILM interfere with file systems and customers will want to know if they can believe all the vendor hype."
