Channel plays key role in PC market growth
Hewlett-Packard increases its market share to 18.8 per cent in buoyant PC sector
A strong channel strategy has been a key driver for the continued growth of the PC market across EMEA, according to analyst firm IDC.
In its second-quarter figures, the market watcher revealed that notebooks are still the success story of the industry with shipments increasing 31 per cent year on year. Desktop sales increased just 2.4 per cent in Q2.
Dell's market share has continued to slide, seeing just 0.2 per cent Q2 growth in EMEA compared with market leader Hewlett-Packard (HP), which experienced 29.1 per cent growth.
HP increased its market share lead with 18.8 per cent of the market compared with second place Dell’s 12.2 per cent. Acer was third with 12 per cent, with Fujitsu Siemens and Toshiba taking six per cent and 4.6 per cent of the market respectively.
Eszter Morvay, senior research analyst at IDC, told CRN: “The channel has played a major role with vendors such as HP paying an increased amount of attention to its SME strategy and building indirect relations.
“Fujitsu Siemens and Toshiba have also been doing the same thing, but although Dell has been performing pretty weakly in the space, recently it has announced new SME-focused products and a desire to work with the channel, so things may well change in the future.”
Shaune Parsons, managing director of VAR Computer World Wales, said: “Notebooks are doing very well for us. But a lot of firms fail to realise they end up replacing laptops more than desktops because they are more susceptible to damage.”
