Globix UK injects cash into London data centre
Managed hosting provider claims that rivals cannot match its new ratio of power to racks
Managed hosting provider Globix UK has invested more than £2m into its London data centre to increase its high-density hosting services.
The firm said the investment will allow its 4,000sq ft data centre to house 20kW high-density hosting racks. It added that the improved data centre will help it attract customers such as banks that want to outsource computing-intensive applications.
Philip Cheek, managing director of Globix UK, said: “The only way to overcome the issue of space is to use blade-server technology. However, most data centres were built during the dot com boom.
“The Globix data centre was built before the dot com boom. It was engineered to support six floors, each 18,000sq ft in size. No other hosting provider in the UK can rival this ratio of power to racks.”
Andrew Michael, chief executive of rival web-hosting firm Fasthosts Internet, said: “Investment in infrastructure is essential to provide high-quality services. The provision of data centres for servers is very expensive when space is a premium.”
High-density cooling racks will be provided to Globix UK’s data centre by uninterruptible-power-supply vendor, American Power Conversion.
However, Bob Tarzey, service director at analyst Quocirca, said that Globix’s cash injection was not a huge investment.
“It’s an expansion of its hosting facilities that allows Globix to cram more computing power into a single rack,” he said. “Some end-users are now looking for hosting of all their servers, but with close personal management abilities.”
Also, Globix last week became the first UK data centre to be awarded the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) by PCI DSS security assessor OneSec.
